Sore Muscle Salve: The Little Jar for Big Mama Aches

If you ask the mamas we see every week what hurts, the answer is usually the same: shoulders from toting babies, knees from chasing them, and a lower back that feels every grocery haul. Dr. Casey's Sore Muscle Salve (1oz, $19.95) is the little jar we make in-house in Lucedale, Mississippi for exactly those days.

The blend is simple on purpose: comfrey, calendula, white willow, ginger, eucalyptus leaf, and peppermint leaf, infused into olive oil and thickened with beeswax, finished with lavender and peppermint essential oils. Nothing you can't pronounce, nothing you wouldn't find in a traditional herbalist's cupboard.

Comfrey is the workhorse here, and it has more than folklore behind it. In a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled multicentre trial, topical comfrey root extract ointment was associated with meaningful relief of acute upper and lower back pain (Giannetti et al., Br J Sports Med 2010; pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19460762). A 2012 clinical overview of comfrey preparations reported similar findings across trials for muscle and joint complaints, including sprains and osteoarthritis (Staiger, Phytother Res 2012; pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22359388).

How we like to use it: massage a small amount into tired shoulders, achy knees, or the low back after a long day — after the garden, after the gym, after carrying a sleepy toddler up the stairs. The peppermint and eucalyptus give a gentle cooling tingle while the comfrey and calendula go to work. For external use only, on unbroken skin.
