Stone Breaker: The Little Tincture With the Boldest Name on Our Shelf

If you've ever leafed through an old herbal, you may have met chanca piedra — a humble South American plant whose name translates literally to "stone breaker." Alongside gravel root (yes, that's really its name too), it's among the most traditional herbs in South American and Western folk practice for the urinary system. Dr. Casey's Stone Breaker Tincture ($19.95) brings the two together in one small-batch bottle, made right here in our shop in Lucedale, Mississippi.

The ingredient list is as simple as we could make it: distilled water, a touch of ethanol (20–25%) to extract and preserve the herbs, gravel root, and chanca piedra. That's it — no fillers, no mystery blends.

And it isn't only folk wisdom. In a 2020 systematic review and meta-analysis of human trials, chanca piedra (Phyllanthus niruri) was associated with modest reductions in kidney stone size and number — though the authors note the evidence base is still small (Can J Urol 2020). An earlier clinical study found P. niruri was associated with normalized elevated urinary calcium in calcium stone formers (Urol Res 2004). We share these the honest way: a promising tradition, with early science still catching up.
